Editor's Pick:
A very interesting, different kind of project from the early period of E.G.C. Like their other single genre albums of boleros, merengues, and boogaloos from the 60s, Tangos Por El Gran Combo tackles a musical form somewhat alien to their usual repertoire, this time addressing the venerable tango from Argentina, putting their own spin on it as only they can. Though I am not the biggest fan of boleros, I do love tangos, and the recordings of Carlos Gardel, with their overwrought emotion and despair, have a special place in my heart. What a surprise then to find out that Rafael and the guys have taken these old recordings and refashioned them as boleros, keeping all the drama, some of the rolling tangoisms of the originals, but injecting that tropical sabor from their own isla del encanto. The result is nothing short of brilliant, combining these two romantic modes of Latin expression – and in so doing, E.G.C. point out the implicit connections, via the habanera bass line rhythm (and its African origin), between the tango and its Antillean cousin, the bolero. For my money, it’s Pellin, on the slower numbers, who nails it here, vocally speaking. He’s kind of like Gardel’s Afro-Boricuan half-brother. Not to detract from Andy Montañez, who I usually favor, but his forte is actually up-tempo Afro-Cuban numbers in the guaracha or son montuno genres sung in a nasal tone (the exception is his version of “Milonga Sentimental” here, done as a great salsa/tango). This album makes you want to join the lady on the cover for a traguito of rum and a sweaty spin on the dance floor in her arms, though it may be the first and last time you see her. Highly Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2009-03-03)
