Alegre All Stars

Te Invita
CD (Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition 130 137), Released 1993; Re-Issued 2006
Produced by Al Santiago
Editor's Pick:
"I’m not intending to add much here to what has been written elsewhere about the importance of the Alegre label and the historic New York studio descarga sessions convened by Al Santiago. This is also a cop-out from recommending a particular Alegre All-Stars album because 'Te Invita' is a compilation. It was originally prepared in 1992 for Charly Records in the UK by compositing six tracks from the 1976 compilation 'They Just Don’t Makim Like Us Anymore' on Alegre, which culled tracks from The Alegre All-Stars Vols. 1 to 4 (1961 to 1966), together with four tracks from the Alegre All-Stars’ 1977 release 'Perdido' (Vol. 5 or 6?), then subsequently issued in the USA. The artwork is a modification of the original front cover of 'Perdido' (Vol. 5 or 6?). Nitpicking detail aside, 'Te Invita' is an excellent entry point to the Alegre All-Stars. However, if you already own this CD, that is no excuse for not buying all the Alegre All-Stars’ volumes as well as other titles where they masquerade under the names of Kako’s After Hour Orchestra, Cesta and Salsa All-Stars." (John Child, 99/00 Catalog)
"The first true jam session band in the U.S. that united the best musicians from New York in the early 60s. This is a 'best of' CD." (Nelson Rodriguez, 98/99 Catalog)
"'Bobby: Bajo y Clarinete' will be your reason for owning this CD." (Max Salazar, 98/99 Catalog)
"This is a head-on compilation of classic material taken from two Alegre All-Star albums released in '76 and '77 ('Perdido' & 'They Just Don't Make'em Like Us Anymore'). Pianist Charlie Palmieri is the captain of the ship with mates like Pacheco (flute), Kako (timbales), Louie Ramirez (vibes), Chombo Silva (tenor sax), Barry Rogers (trombone) and others." (José Rizo, 98/99 Catalog)
"The brainchild of former bandleader, saxophonist, arranger, philosopher and quintessential Nuyorican turned record store owner, producer Al Santiago. Al assembled an all-star ensemble from the trenches in New York City's bustling underground Afro-Cuban dance band scene in the 1960s. Names like Kako, Charlie Palmieri, Frankie Malabe and 'Chombo' Silva were highlighted as soloists in a jam session (Descarga) setting showcasing their virtuosity and legendary drinking style. Compiled from the six albums they did, this collection is a must!" (Bobby Sanabria, 98/99 Catalog)
"A compilation of some of the best from this all-star group. True genius on Al Santiago's part as producer." (Joe Conzo, 96/97 Catalog)
"A group of great old timers swinging, especially with 'El Manisero' and 'Manteca.' " (Joe Gaines, 96/97 Catalog)
"This was the first great jam session LP made. Only the genius of Al Santiago could have put these musicians, along with their egos, together and gotten this great performance. Forerunner of the Fania All-Stars." (Larry Harlow, 96/97 Catalog)
"This is another compilation CD. We have the original albums. The spirit in the music is coming through, these guys are having a great time. Everybody is going for the same thing. Kako is playing some incredible solos and Charlie Palmieri is happening. You can hear them encouraging each other. The horn lines are on-the-spot improvisation. We recorded 'Yumbambe' on one of our first records, and it really gets people to get up and dance. I recommend it to anyone who's into swingin' music." (R.B., Poncho Sanchez & Ramon Banda, 96/97 Catalog)
"Of the more than 200 LPs I have produced I have purposely only picked three for my top 25 list. First I will complain of the lack of notes and info on this CD. Buy this if only for 'Manteca' and 'El Manisero'. " (Al Santiago, 94/95 Catalog) (DR, 2006-11-04)

We are happy to offer the new digitally remastered reissues from the classic salsa label, Fania. Brought to you by Emusica, which, over time, will be reissuing the entire catalog with improved sound and superb liner notes too - some of which are written by Descarga.com's own virtually resident scholar, John Child.
Many of these new reissues have been remastered by Jon Fausty or Bob Katz, so even if you already own the older CD version you might want to consider upgrading to the new improved edition. They're even less expensive than the originals were! Good news all around.
Highly Recommended.

This a wonderful compilation taken from the 5 or 6 infamous Alegre All-Stars records. An absolute must! Complete with between song banter about (what else) booze. A classic.
