Paquito D'Rivera Presents 40 Years Of Cuban Jam Session

Recorded in 1993, 40 Years of Cuban Jam Session is a landmark album that helped introduce the modern Cuban jazz sound to the world. With El Negro on trap drums, electric bass -- except for the magnificent tracks that Cachao rumbles through on upright -- and a modern harmonic vocabulary, it set a paradigm that's still being dealt with. It's not all successful, and the fusiony touches sound more than dated, but the best parts of this recording are as good as anything on tape. The line up of people, including Juan Pablo Torres, Chocolate, Kike Hernandez and more is pretty astonishing, and Paquito, yakety saxish at times, sails through proceedings.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2011-07-15)
Recent recording of band members who jammed together in 1950s Cuba. Cachao, Chocolate, Chombo Silva, and others.
"A beautiful idea and way of keeping the 'Cuban Jam Session' tradition alive in the 90s. I can't seem to get enough of 'Cachao' with kudos to Paquito." (Raul Rico Jr. 94/95 Catalog)
