Editor's Pick:
Though this recording is not an essential Lebron Bros. album, it is nonetheless a refreshing, and even challenging, departure from their earlier patented sound and is well worth investigating because it is so different. Whereas the original Lebron mix was boogaloo and raw proto-salsa that featured a prominent sax section and a bare-bones approach, La Ley is a completely different animal. The sound is at once smoother and more crowded, even jumbled in places. There is now a progressively arranged string section, some flute (uncredited) and trombone, and even clarinet. Who ever though the brothers would be sounding like a charanga? The songs are all original as usual, and feature some really interesting and creative lyrics. Pablo’s voice is now sounding mature, even old in places, and the whole record has an aura of maturity mixed with experimentation. Excellent liner notes and decent sound complement this reissue. You might say it’s a nice record, but with strings attached! Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-06-05)
