Fania All Stars

Rhythm Machine
CD (Fania/Sony/Red 477692), Released 1977; Re-Issued 2009
Editor's Pick:
Probably the best of the four albums that the Fania All Stars recorded for Columbia records in the mid-late seventies, Rhythm Machine most successfully fused salsa with the pop styles of fusion jazz, R&B, and disco. Smartly produced by Jay Chattaway, and with a studio packed with amazing talent as well as an entire string orchestra. The All Stars recorded some pretty amazing, adventurous, tracks here although perhaps to the chagrin of salsa purists. In addition to the Fania stable of musicians (Papo Lucca, Nicky Marrero, Roberto Roena, Mongo Santamaria, Bobby Valentin) one can also hear the contributions of Louie Ramirez, Barry Rogers, Randy Brecker, Bob James and a host of others. This album has aged very well -- and borne some real fruit, too. Ruben Blades' anthemic "Juan Pachanga" the last track on Rhythm Machine, is the perfect exclamation point. Highly Recommended.
