**Classics Revisited**
Rightly or wrongly, I regard The Bad Street Boys as a short-lived descendant of the late Bobby Rodríguez's band La Compañia. Not only did they perform a similar bilingual repertoire of típico and salsa in English material, but the original co-leader and co-producer of the nine-piece Los Amigos And The Bad Street Boys, as they were first known, was longtime La Compañia trombonist and English vocals singer Eddie Iglesias (died: June 29th 2002). Joining him in the formative lineup were another two ex-La Compañia members: timbalero Charlie Salinas and singer / percussionist José Acosta. The band's other original co-producer was percussionist José (Nando) Pintor, who became sole leader by the time of the aggregation's final recording. They made a total of four albums on the JAP label between the mid-'80s and 1988: the popular Cheek To Cheek, Taste of the Neighborhood / Sabor del Barrio, Looking For Trouble (Buscando Problemas) and José Pintor presents The Bad Street Boys. Frankie Morales, who currently leads his own Mambo Of The Times Orquesta, provided Spanish lead vocals to the band's first three albums. This 1995 CD is a "best of" compilation with outstanding hard salsa gems like "La Calle Esta Dura" and "La Bolita" nestling alongside compelling salsified versions of the English language standards "Cheek To Cheek" and "The Lady Is A Tramp".
