1968's Riot! was Mr. Afrofilipino's gold record-winning third outing for Fania Records on which he further developed the Latin soul style he pioneered on his 1967 debut Gypsy Woman and '68 follow-up Subway Joe; again throwing in typical and boogaloo numbers for good measure. "Joe Bataan flawlessly intermixed two musical cultures and many styles and branches of both cultures. From mambo, cha cha chá to guaguancó to bolero to Latin rock to Latin jazz to doo wop to soul," wrote Al Santiago in his Descarga Newsletter column in 1995. Exactly! Highly recommended.
