Released in the summer of 1974, Celia & Johnny was the first of six successful collaborations with Johnny Pacheco on Vaya Records, which consolidated Celia Cruz's newfound popularity after Larry Harlow's Latin opera album Hommy re-launched her career the previous year. The album spawned her trademark numbers "Quimbara" and "Toro Mata".
Highly recommended. (John Child, 2010-04-10)
Description:
Original Price: $13.98 / Now Only: $11.88
The quintessential Celia Cruz salsa recording. "Celia & Johnny" typifies the best of what this Cuban jewel can do. Of course, all of the Vaya releases have some filler material — a slow tempo bolero thrown in here and there, but that only seems to feed the fire of all the hot numbers that pepper Celia's work. Rhythm singer bar none. Get it.

Reviews:
"The showcase of the typical Cuban conjunto sound. A dancer's delight." (Max Salazar 98/99 Catalog)
"Celia shines on this recording like a pearl in a black velvet jewelry box. Pacheco's conjunto is the perfect setting for her, and without making any comparisons with La Sonora Matancera or any of the other orchestras which have accompanied her, this is a match made in heaven. Great performances from the sidemen, great coro, great arrangements, and great overall sabor. My favorite tunes are 'Canto a La Habana,' which has a distinctively live feel, and the laid back but funky 'El Paso Del Mulo.'" (Henry Fiol 98/99 Catalog)
"One of Johnny Pacheco’s greatest achievements as a producer is re-uniting Celia Cruz with the typical instrumentation and sabor of La Sonora Matancera. This album was their first such joint venture and had a lot to do with revitalizing Celia’s career . Some excellent bolero interpretations add variety to 'Quimbara Cumbara,' 'Tengo El Idde' and other staples of Celia’s uptempo repertoire." (David M. Carp 98/99 Catalog)
"An early 70s release by Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco that set the style for that decade. A great line-up of musicians backing Celia, the Queen." (Alan James Geik 98/99 Catalog)
