Afro-American Aspects: Percussion Text
Book
(Rhombus Publishing BAIM-1),
Description:
This newly revised second edition contains over 100 detailed photographs of ethnic instruments and techniques, plus numerous rhythmic examples for drummers and percussionists alike. The first part of Volume I contains over 50 African, Cuban and Brazilian conga rhythms in ensemble. Also included are 15 contemporary popular conga rhythms with adaptations for drum-set. Other chapters in Part One include "Clave and Bell Patterns," "Salsa Music," "Reggae," plus a chapter on "Accompanying Instruments." Part Two is a developmental overview of Western music idioms which have benefitted from African and South American influences. The first topic examined is the classical approach to the snare drum. Concepts of rudimental playing are then adapted for drumset with the presentation of the jazz idiom. Following the study on jazz drumming are chapters on rock, jazz-rock fusion and funk; all of which include basic discussions and rhythmic examples applicable in many musical situations. This first volume should provide the student with an added awareness of rhythm and variation using a number of available instruments and techniques.
