Las Estrellas Areito originally recorded a suite of albums in the late seventies that some consider to be the cream of the crop of the extended Cuban son and descargas (jam sessions). This 2 CD set, with good liner notes, is the distillation of those 4 or 5 albums. If you don't have the original set this package is a must have. Some of Cuba's finest musicians participated in these now legendary sessions. (BP, 1999-04-13)

"The Estrellas de Areito recorded some four or five albums in 1979 for the African salsa market, producing one of the great Cuban jam sessions. Nonesuch has condensed the sessions down to two CDs, now titled 'Los Heroes.' The group includes many of the musicians heard on 'Bueno Vista [Social Club],' including Mr. [Ruben] Gonzalez, Pio Leyva and others, and it's as relaxed and improvised as this music gets. It flows, with riffs and solos and choral sections all coming together. At times the music becomes sloppy, but that's the nature of jam sessions,and the tunes, which sometimes cruise gracefully for more than ten minutes, always seem too short." (Peter Watrous )
