News Flash (in case you didn’t know)! Cartagena Entertainment has launched an ambitious reissue series for all the early El Gran Combo releases. This is a great opportunity to study the evolution of salsa, and EGC in particular, as it gradually moved from the older styles to more modern arrangements. It’s amazing that music that was popular 40 years ago still sounds hot and fresh today. Maldito Callo is an excellent album chock full of infectious grooves, diverse genres (merengues, bombas, guarachas, a son montuno, and some boleros). For my money, vocalists Montañez and Pellín really make these recordings special, and the rhythm section of Martín Quiñones (conga), Roberto Roena (bongó, campana), and Milton Correa (timbál) bounces along at full tilt, making for some propulsive, raw, and fun dance tracks. DJs can mix the proto-salsa burners “Sin Tu Cariño,” “Maldito Callo,” and “Señor Tata” into their sets and the dancers will love it, as much for the mesmerizing coros and intricate horns as for the in-the-pocket bell patterns. Aside from the humorous lyrics of the previously mentioned guarachas, there is also “El Negro Bembe,” a more serious guaracha with a black pride message that fits in with the civil rights movement, and presages the Latino political awakening in salsa.
