Editor's Pick:
Marc Anthony's new release is a solid, pop salsa project that won't disappoint his hard-core fans. This listener, however, would wish that he try not to take each tune so seriously, as if it were his last. So much emoting can be exhausting, and I fought back the urge to fast-forward the syrupy crooning that began each tune. It's only when the coro breaks in and uplifts the tempo (and spirit) when there is any musical space for dancing. Thank goodness for the top-notch coro section. That Mr. Anthony is a very good singer is undeniable. He ought to lighten up, however, and have some genuine fun with it -- stray from the script a bit. It *is* salsa, afterall. I did like the use of Ozzie Melendez' trombone. On occasion, this made reference to the "classic" salsa feel of the '70s. And, of course, Yomo Toro on cuatro! (BP, 2001-11-27)
