Lilí Martinez (1950-1990), the patriarchal pianist-composer-arranger, and one of the most respected Cuban songwriters specializing in the son style, is paid heartfelt homage in this all-star tribute.
Directed by bandleader/pianist Manolito Simonet (Manolito y Su Trabuco), this top-notch band performs some of Mr. Martinez's most beloved, rhythmically satisfying sones -- great dance material. Over the years, these compositions have been interpreted by every major Cuban orchestra, most recently being the Buena Vista Social Club.
Martínez is most associated with Arsenio Rodríguez's orchestra in the mid to late '40s and the orchestra of Félix Chappottín in the '50s and '60s. His influence on contemporary pianists and composers is, without question, major. Names like Eddie Palmieri, Frank Hernández and Pappo Lucca are mentioned in the liners. This is a wonderful, well done project with major league participating vocalists: Pedro Lugo "El Nene," Mario Rivera "Mayito," Paulito F.G. and Isaac Delgado.
