Continuing his musical relationship with the Costa Rican ensemble, Editus, and including additional guests Boca Livre, De Boca En Boca and a body of lush strings and musical references with sounds that span the globe, the title of Mr. Blades new project, “Mundo,” is quite appropriate.
The lush harmonies and beautiful string passages are quite moving, but it is with Mr. Blades ballads were the strength lies. Listen, I shed more than one tear listening to the inspired “Danny Boy.” Jeezuz.
And I simply loved the too-short bagpipe-salsa number “San Patricio” that he chose to end this CD with. After all, it is the salsa audience that created Ruben Blades, the star. Perhaps another project, entirely salsa, could be considered. You know Ruben, I saw you perform in Prospect Park last year, and it was “Pedro Navaja” that brought the house down. You still kick ass, bro. This world music stuff is great for the resume and ego, but your salsa is *very* spicy.
