In this supper-club performance the musician's collars are buttoned tight under their neckties, beneath their black suits. Mr. Rojas, whose suit was beige, has practiced his calculated gestures, the clenched fist and solemn downward glances and all, to such a degree that the first half of this performance comes off as uninspired. The performance is tight, but so much so that there is no room for surprise or spontaneity. Wayne Newton. Fans of Mr. Rojas will not be disappointed, as the live versions do not stray far from the recordings.
The second half of the show, however, Mr. Rojas changes from his sweaty suite to some leisure clothes, and things begin to click...the group starts to run on its own momentum, and the band members finally seem to enjoy themselves a bit. They let loose with a sizzling version of Tito Puente’s “Ran Kan Kan.”
Special guest Roberto Roena is always a pleasure to see. He is a bongocero con clase, and quite a hoofer. One wishes he would have stayed for more than one song. (BP, 2002-12-26)
