Editor's Pick:
An amazing wealth of talent showed up to participate in this Celebration of Latin Jazz. This live performance, recorded live at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami, May 18th, 2000, was well conceived in its choice of material, opening up with the Cal Tjader classic "Soul Sauce," then moving later into a spectacular Tito Puente tribute. Pete Escovedo never sounded better...he damn-near ignited his timbales. A quick look at the rest of the line-up will indicate the scope of this project. This was very special event and, luckily for us, it has been memorialized in this carefully crafted, very well produced DVD. One of the highlights is a simply terrific "Ven Morena," led by vocalist Oscar D'Leon who does a one on one with flautist Nestor Torres. And Steve Turre solos on an array of conch shells! Later, choreographer Debbie Allen does a great dance number to Puente's sizzling "Ran Kan Kan." Highly recommended. (BP, 2003-02-07)
