Orquesta Anacaona

Ten Sisters Of Rhythm: Film, Images & Music DVD
DVD (Universal/Pimienta 60558), Released 2003;
Editor's Pick:
This is a wonderful documentary (two, really) of the infamous a girl Cuban dance band popular since the 1930s. Contains vintage clips, photos and audio as well as recent interviews, in Cuba, with original band members. It is wonderful to see an 80-ish Ondina Castro pick up her trumpet and play with feeling.
With special guest Frank Emilio Flynn.
Excellent quality, well produced, and highly recommended. (BP, 2003-03-09)

This DVD is made up of two parts. The first is called Havana Girl Orchestra - A Cuban family chronicle which is a documentary film that runs 45 minutes. The second part is called Ten Sisters of Rhythm which is 40 minutes of band music by Anacaona. Picture this: Havana 1932. In the open-air cafes, the aries libres, seven female musicians caused a utter furor. With their enchanting smiles the girls, some still under age, charmed their audience with son music, whilst ten year old Millo passionately beat the bongos. What a scandal! But the music, which the bourgeois society of Cuba had long viewed as primitive and vulgar due to its African roots, enthralled the audience. That was the beginning of son's path to worldwide success. ANACAONA - which is what the seven sisters called themselves, after a famous native American woman who resisted the Spanish invaders in the Caribbean - was to go down in history as the first female Cuban son septet. And more than 50 years later ANACAONA was declared part of Cuba's "national heritage", because the sisters of the Castro family made up the oldest women's orchestra on Cuba and performed in public up until 1989.

This DVD by Pa'ti Pa'mi/Termidor Music Publishing is the first to document the musical bandwidth of the ANACAONA female orchestra with son pieces from the 1930s right up to romantic bolero songs and wild mambos from the 50s. It appears parallel with the publication of the biography of Alicia Castro, the last leader of the orchestra, published by ECON. It is thanks to the daughter of Millo, the outstanding percussionist of ANACAONA, that the unique history was now able to be documented. The journalist, ethnologist and film author Ingrid Kummels has for many years worked on this piece of musical heritage.

Special guest: Frank Emilio Flynn.
