Strong debut release from timbalero Hector Cuevas and his band. Produced and arranged by the esteemed Jesus Alejandro Pérez "El Niño," who also wrote three sizzling salsa tracks here (he also sings and plays bass, piano, flute and tres on this project), Cubarengue also incorporates some hard merengue dura. Cuevas studied with Victor D' Carlos, timbalero for Johnny Ventura. It is not a coincidence that the several merengue tracks, including the explosive "Merengue Jazz," are Ventura compositions.
