Yet another terrific Venezuelan entry this month. Superb old school trombone-based salsa in the style of Manny Oquendo y Conjunto Libre. Very danceable with rich, infectious grooves throughout. Includes a fiery rendition of the Eddie Palmieri classic "Muñeca." This one would work very well in the salsa clubs, especially tracks like "Bailatino Llegó." Special guest Joel Uriola on piano. Produced by trombonist Eliel Rivero, who has played on Saxomania's "El Nazanero, a Tribute To Ismael Rivera." Highly recommended. (BP 09/09/03) Another strong salsa release from Venezuela; Joel Uriola contributes a few arrangements. It's modern in the way Fania was in the '70s; McCoy Tyner's piano style wends its way through the works. A couple of trombones make the connection more explicit, and the hard swing, too. There's ample solo space, giving the recording a live feel to it. And like the Uriola album, the piano figures always move away from the traditional. Good looking arepas on the cover, also. Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2003-09-23)
