In the early 1960's, the streets of Havana overflowed with post-revolutionary optimism, inspiring innovation in thought, movement and rhythm. Cuban cultural icon Pello el Afrokan created the exciting new Carnaval music and dance "Mozambique" at this time, fusing elements of sacred Bata drumming with Samba and Conga Comparsa. His new "world beat" invention created an opening in Cuban music that is now recognized as the root of Songo and other modern forms. Because of political differences between the US and Cuba, accurate information about Mozambique has been rare, if not "Top Secret". California percussionist Kim Atkinson was fortunate to study with Pello in Havana in 1985. Here, Kim gives a clear and concise presentation of the original parts to the rhythm and their essential relationship to Rumba clave. The second half of the program is devoted to performances of Mozambique in different size ensembles and in creative combinations with Bata and Songo rhythms. Features of Kim’s presentation include: Highly Recommended. (DR, 2004-04-20)
