In what may the salsa release of summer 2004, pianist and bandleader Ricky Gonzalez has put forth a high-octane record that will make the dance-floor test the house capacity. He has managed to produce a smart, explosive record which might be impressive if it were his 5th CD as a leader, but for a debut it is quite an achievement -- even with a few forgivable blips of excessive polish and the obligatory infusion of hip hop (introducing FR3SCO).
A young veteran in the New York salsa scene Mr. Gonzalez has performed with Ray Barretto, Tito Nieves, Domingo Quiñones, Jimmy Bosch, Son Boricua, Jose Alberto "El Canario" and on and on. In fact, both El Canario and Mr. Barretto are a featured guests on Oasis. Also sitting in are Johnny Pacheco, Orestes ViIlato and Dave Valentin. This, folks, is what's meant by an "All Star" production.
Some more name dropping? Here are the featured singers: Ray Viera, Herman Olivera, Jimmy Sabater (with an updated "To Be With You"), Frankie Vazquez, and, as mentioned, José Alberto "El Canario." It doesn't get much better than this.
A definite DJ Alert. Listen to "Timbalero" -- with Mr. Vilato battling it out with Luis Quintero, and "Mi Rumba Es Candela" (with Mr. Barretto on congas) -- soon to be sure-fire club favorites.
