Kim Atkinson's definitive Mozambique Vol. 2 conga drum instructional is finally out on DVD. This time around, the rhythms are expressed in 2/3 clave. With chapter selections. Kim, who learned Mozambique from its originator, Pello El Afrokan, is both patient and articulate -- sounding out the time in both 8th and 16th notes. A very well done study tool. Recommended. Description:
Mozambique!: DVD Volume 2: Cuban and American styles in 2-3 clave. In this video, Kim continues with and expands on his extremely thorough presentation of Mozambique, the Cuban Carnaval music created by Pello el Afrokan. While Mozambique! Vol. 1 covered a more folkloric style of the rhythm, in Mozambique Volume 2 Kim shows how the rhythm is commonly played in a band setting. The second half of this video is devoted to the "New York" style, played on congas and timbale, which is generally understood as Mozambique in the U.S. Outstanding features of Kim's presentation include: •Instruction in playing and understanding 2-3 Rumba clave •All parts are played with the bell pattern or clave •Thorough instruction, and breakdown of bell, conga and bass drum parts •All parts are counted in both 8th and 16th notes •4 and 7 piece ensemble performances of the Cuban style •Instruction and performance of the American style •Video includes booklet with all parts written in both staff notation and time-unit -box system.
