Editor's Pick:
Pancho’s son, a pianist, comes out swinging. Backed by a group that includes Tatá Güines and Changuito, along with Dad on tres, Daniel plays deep in the Cuban piano tradition. This is a descarga, with little use for modern Cuban jazz, and as such it’s stately and elegant, unrushed and a bit formal, in a good way. And he gets enthusiastic as well, letting long percussive line run over the bar, pushing and pulling the music, rattling it a bit. The tumbao’s are often fantastic and complicated; check out "Tumbao del Feo." There’s a lot here, hiding behind the tradition. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2005-03-23)
