A 2-DVD set. Disc one, entitled Vida, is a biographic overview of the life and career of the late Sonero Del Pueblo who passed away in October of 2004. There are interviews with Mr. Santiago, as well as with family members and other important bandleaders and musicians. Some of the contributors to this portion of the DVD are Bobby Valentin, Tommy Olivencia, Willie Rosario, Luisito Carrion, Roberto Anglero, Sammy Ayala, Darvel Garcia, Billy Van, and Valentin Valdes Jr. There is also some rare footage of Mr. Santiago's funeral.
Disc Two, entitled Obra, consists of live performances by Mr. Santiago and his band, mostly in the early '80s that were initially broadcast on, from what I can tell, a television special in Puerto Rico with a live audience. Despite the somewhat low quality of the picture — it looks like vintage TV footage — the energy and content of Mr. Santiago's performances are outstanding, and would be a fine addition to the collections of you serious salsa fanatics out there. You get a real sense of Marvin Santiago, the singer performer. Check out, especially, his fiery and robust interpretation of Rosendo Ruiz' "Fuego A La Jicotea." It's a killer.
