Editor's Pick:
On the Anglo side, we present Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Jo Jones and Specs Wright. On the Latin side, we have Sabu, Patato, Jose Valiente, Ubaldo Nieto and Evilio Quintero. In between the two forces, Ray Bryant on piano, Wendell Marshall and Herbie Mann. Settle in to hear the show, and it’s a show, starting off with the boiling "Buhaina Chant," a piece that has a dizzying amount of swing going on. It’s all improvised, all done in one take, and it’s all fascinating, a document of one day in March of 1957, when a bunch of very, smart, very talented people came into the studio to improvise. There’s tons of call and response, and following the music’s like following an intense, deeply felt and swinging conversation. There’s nothing like this in the history of the music, and it’s all another example of why Blue Note was way ahead of other labels of the time. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2006-05-20)
