Those musicians who can navigate between the American system of swing and Cuba’s rhythmic complexities, and make it sound right, are super rare. The two languages are very, very difficult, and learning one doesn’t mean you can handle the other. Along comes Berroa, who has been negotiating the two systems for decades. And he’s put together an album of Afro Cuban jazz that is deeply intelligent and more than capable. He’s joined by Gonzalo Rubalcaba — whose own studies in American jazz have been documented over the last twenty years as his playing changes — along with perhaps the best group a drummer could buy, including the some of the great Latin jazz musicians in New York, including Ed Simon, David Sánchez, John Patitucci, Felipe LaMoglia, Armando Gola, Giovanni Hidalgo, Tomas Cruz, Philbert Armenteros, Jorge Iglesias, and Santiago Nani. It’s hard-ass swing that he’s going after, using Chick Corea's “Matrix,” Wayne Shorter’s “Pinocchio,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “Woody ‘N You” along with “La Comparsa” (by Lecuona), an original, and a piece by Jobim. There’s some fusion elements here, like Rubalcaba’s electric keyboards; at times the music gives off a Miles Davis electric feel — see “Joao Su Merced” — which goes into elements of Afro-Cuban religious music. All great, funky serious music, and a primer on how to orchestrate small group music from behind a drum kit.
