Gene Ammons

Boss Tenor (with Ray Barretto)
CD (Prestige 8102), Released 1960; Re-Issued 2006
Editor's Pick:
Mmmm, the sounds of jazz New York in the early 1960s, deeply soulful, imbued with blues and swinging without any doubts at all. Boss Tenor is another great session from Ammons on tenor saxophone, and featuring a fantastic rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Ray Barretto is on conga, adding a light touch on "Hittin’ the Jug," then turning up the volume on "Close Your Eyes." Like all the jazz sessions he participated in, Barretto fit right in, knowing exactly how he was supposed to function in the American swing world. It’s pretty much perfect music. Listen how Barretto and Taylor lock in on "Blue Ammons"; it’s how this stuff was supposed to be done.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2006-06-07)
