Niño Josele

Paz - Y La Música De Bill Evans
Import CD (Calle 54 Sony BMG 83578), Released 2006;
Produced by Fernando Trueba y Javier Limón
Editor's Pick:
Josele, a flamenco guitarist from Almeria in Spain, has done something unexpected: record an album of pieces either by Bill Evans, or associated with him. But Evans was the man who, along with Miles Davis, helped introduce introspection to American music. Flamenco and introspection aren’t words that are usually put in the same sentence. It works, with Paz being a gentle soul, and a fairly capable jazz guitarist when confronted with changes. He’s joined occasionally by Marc Johnson, the great bassist, and El Negro on drums, along with Jerry Gonzalez and Tom Harrell on trumpets and Joe Lovano on saxophone. The singers Estrella Morente and Freddy Cole show up, too, and the album works almost cinematically, moving from mood to mood and texture to texture.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2006-07-23)
