Editor's Pick:
Wow, a *new* CD from first-class salsero Lefty Pérez. With his clear, commanding, tenor voice, Pérez takes control of his blistering, ready-for-action band with apparent ease. Like a hot knife through butter, he cuts through pure danceclub tracks like "Salseros Unidos," "Mentiras" and "Mi Puerto Rico," — a few of the best numbers on this CD, with savvy. The dozen original tracks here — many written by Mr. Pérez and arranged, clearly with experienced salsa know-how — mostly by Milton Sesentón and Victor "Papo" Ortiz, are so good, it begs to ask "where has this guy been?" Check out the shear force he's able to create with his composition "Guaya Guaya" (with Alfredo De La Fe, no less, on violin). But the entire CD ranks right up there with some of the best salsa to have come out this year. There's simply no filler material here, no corn meal or drippy ballads. Just unadulterated, unrelenting, salsa virtuosity culminating with "Que Grata Reunion," the perfect ending to Salseros Unidos. On this track, Pérez is joined by some of salsa royalty: Richie Ray, Bobby Cruz, Giovanny Hidalgo, Nelson Gonzalez, Cheito Quinones, and Ruben Rodriguez. Yeah, no kidding. In summary, here's a potent, rich, double espresso disguised as a salsa CD — it will have your pulse rate up in seconds. And with none of his earlier solo work currently available, not even his previous release, the 1997 "Soy Tuyo," a new release by Lefty Pérez is a pretty big deal here. And this one's a killer, folks. A dance party supreme — a big DJ Alert! Very Highly Recommended. (BP, 2006-09-18)
