Ouch. The return of Bamboleo produces more slamming, hard-core timba from the imagination of Lazaro Valdés,one of Cuba’s great composers and montuneros, and the man who reimagined the role of women singers in Cuban modern music. As usual, the arrangements take the music all over the place, into breaks, and quiet spots, and areas of horn and rhythm section blowouts. The singer who has the not-so-enviable task of replacing Haila, Tania Palmera, can sing — though the mix is a little weird; she’s kind of down — and she bulls through the coros, the drums roiling under her, Valdés’ piano voicings moving from montunos to modern jazz chords full of dissonance. At times she takes on a rap like cadence, Cuban style, and it all swings. The boy singer Ronnys Salas can sing well, also, and he’s given four tracks on which to spread out. Some of this is unbelievably grooving — listen to the opening of "Fiebre", for some funk throw down. Sounds like the Meters meets Cuba, an idea I like plenty. Highly Recommended.
