It’s hard not to like salsa from Venezuela; it’s so full of life and influences. It never sounds like a museum piece. And La Banda Siglosa is a good example. It’s a small group, and it rocks, with a distorted guitar filling in the montunos, and an electric bass giving the group an almost Cuban sound. The tunes they cover, from Marcelino Guerra, Ruben Blades, Matamoros, Adalberto Alvarez, Ray Barreto suggest that the band knows about music. The album almost sounds live, and it bristles with energy and rhythm, and sounds new, not bound by tradition. It’s a party I’d like to have been at, or even better, go to. Wish they’d invite me.
