Description:
The film is a portrait of Afro-Cuban drummer, Francisco Aguabella, a master both of the bata tradition of drumming in the sacred celebrations of the African-derived syncratic sects of Santería, Abaqua and Yeza and of the secular conguero tradition. Aguabella was born and reared in Cuba, lived in New York for a number of years and has been a California resident since 1971. The film explores Aguabella's role both as a sacred drummer and a figure of historical influence in Latin jazz, pop and fusion in the United States. Today, he continues to perform Latin jazz, as well as function as a tambolero in his religious community. Also appearing in this film are: Armando Peraza, Carlos "Patato" Valdez, Israel "Cachao" López, Dizzy Gillespie, Daniel Ponce, Bobbi Cespedes, Carlos Santana, John Santos, Katherine Dunham, and Robert Farris Thompson.
