The heavyweight champion of the tres arrives with his acoustic son group, Cabildo del Son. Like on his earlier albums, the tresero flashes a bunch of styles, throwing in jazz harmonies and runs (check out the harmonies on the first track, a traditional son that has moments of McCoy Tyner), and quotes and other stuff, that the virtuosity blows away the illusion of normalcy that the group promotes. It’s a working group, so it sounds together, organized, with routines. There’s plenty of son majesty here: the opening few bars of Errante y Bohemio, with the group’s singer William Rodgriguez soaring over the acoustic instruments of the group. Several guest step up to sing, including Miriam Ramos and David Alvarez. And check out the unbelievable swing on Amat’s introduction to Sorpresa de Harina Con Boniato.
