Back in stock! This free-wheeling descarga style band can really swing. Based in Medellin, Colombia, Sonora 8 rejects the common wisdom that Colombian salsa style has to be typified by speed, catchy hooks, and easily commercialized refrains. Here they use typical instrumentation with the inclusion of electric guitar to create extended dance grooves. This is almost psychedelic salsa that has roots in the early salsa of Panamá and Colombia. Think *early* Fruko, Los Exagerados, Los Corraleros de Majagual, Freddy y Sus Afro Latinos and the like. Some of the stuff is weird, but in a good way. This band would be a dream in a small club at 2 a.m. — it's the stuff of atmosphere, elation and surrender. Have a few drinks, lower the lights and let the party begin. DJ Alert. Highly Recommended. (BP, 2008-04-13)
