Ok, let's get specific: Algo Diferente is a full-throttle swinging salsa and mambo jazz project that dancers often pine for. Led by Venezuelan timbalero Juan Pablo Barrios, this is music that channels the Afro-Latin big band traditions of mixing the set with hot uptempo numbers, tasty rich mambos, and dance oriented jazz. The salsa tracks, like "La Rumba" and "Godin Guidon" are top notch -- some of the hottest salsa tracks you'll hear. The mambo and jazz numbers are equally well done and include a funky interpretation of Chico Corea's "Diferente." The project is retro in a good way. Barrios joins company with, say, the Big Three Palladium Orchestra, the Latin Giants of Jazz, and German Villareal who all harken to a time of artistic musicality and pure swing pleasure.
