Paquito D’Rivera

Funk Tango
CD (Paquito Records 45512), Released 2007;
Editor's Pick:
What a band! Rivera writes in the liner notes about how his quintet’s the basis for all sorts of different sized units, and pieces on the recording range from duets to septets, and it’s all very, very good. In part that comes from the band, which includes Diego Urcola on trumpet and valve trombone, along with the pianist Ed Simon, both being some of my favorite jazz musicians on the New York scene. Oscar Stagnaro is on bass, and Mark Walker and Pernell Saturnino play percussion. Fernando Otero and Alon Yavnai sit in on piano. They play music from across Latin America, including tangos, contradanzas and milongas, mostly original compositions; there’s one piece by Astor Piazolla, the Argentinian genius. D’Rivera plays some clarinet and saxophone and the band grooves happily.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-01-31)
