Here it is: the first great Puerto Rican recording of the year. From the first notes of the first track you can hear a great tempo, tons of energy and fantastic singing and arrangements. This is the sort of music you hear live, but rarely hear on recordings; it’s that vital, full of dance floor energy, driving coros and great playing. The musicians, some of the best to be found in Puerto Rico include William Thompson on congas, Tito De Gracia on timbales, Pedro Pérez on bass, Willie Sotelo on the keyboards — and as producer, pretty much guaranteeing a hot rod project. It has that baritone sound to the arrangements; the music’s beautiful and thick and humid. It’s also fast — this stuff is perfect for the dancefloor and the radio. It’s the sort of thing you want to keep you awake, driving long distances. Listen how the band and the singers (actually Papo Sanchez singing) blow open "El Viernes Social" with long, percussive improvisations in between tight, explosive coros. Or how on "La Mitad," Jerry Medina pounds out the melody. It's nothing short of amazing. This music to live with.
