Editor's Pick:
Baez is a guitarist from Venezuela living in New York, and he writes complicated music that takes classical and local sources and mixes them up. It’s often beautiful and he’s joined by Anat Cohen, a young hotshot in New York on clarinet and a varying group that includes Roberto Koch on bass, the percussion of Alexander Livinalli and the drums of Adolfo Herrera, all adept at the tricky rhythms of Venezuela. This is an art project, but like so many works like this it draws from the streets. On La Patilla, 20th century modernism comes out, with saxophonist Pablo Gil taking snake-like lines in front of the band and Baez answering with modern, chromatic harmony. When he plays solo, the classical foundation of what he does shows up, as on the intro to "Choro." It’s all elegant, kind of uptown, and I like it’s sophistication. Also with flautist Huascar Baradas, and conguero Gerardo Rosales. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-02-20)
