As one might imagine from an all-star powered project, the recording just doesn’t stop handing out good things. Albita joins with Rey Ruiz and Donato Poveda (Willy Chirino’s in there, too) for music that takes its direction from the almighty son Cubano, with detours into classic big band dance music. There’s a theme here, that each tune takes on a place in Cuba, and that allows the three singers to stretch out on the great traditional tunes like Marianao and Santa Isabel de Las Lajas, along with new material. The band includes Omar Hernandez on bass and Omar Hernandez Jr. on piano, Ed Calle on saxophone, Eduardo Rodriguez on percussion and more. There’s a lot of variety here, including the tune "Hermosa Habana," featuring a vocal choir that has a lot to do with Vocal Sampling; it’s amazingly beautiful. There’s great singing here, and often enough the singers trade the lead; it’s all perfectly executed, perfectly sung, with passion and a surplus of ability. An achievement, masked in casual friendly, even nostalgic music.
