The Cuban singer who now lives in the United States recorded this in Cuba in 1997; it has that sort of pop sheen you’d expect from the time, with lots of keyboards. It’s clear she’s a gifted singer; it’d be nice to pry off the keyboard strings and dump them somewhere. Anyway, a gifted singer going through the motions on what is by now a historical object; when the band and she decide to rock, hinting at timba, you understand why she has the reputation she has, as a singer and an improviser.
