Editor's Pick:
What a great, special little record. The band, from Guantanamo, works through a bunch of the styles of the eastern part of Cuba, including the Changüí. The musicians use traditional instruments, including the marimbula, a large version of a thumb piano to take the bass parts, and the tres, plus smaller percussion instruments. They throw in other rhythms, like sucu-sucu, as well, and rap cadences, and references to the Lion King and the music has both rhythmic strength of local dance musics, and the lightness of acoustic music. It’s pretty amazing, the sort of music that often shows up over-sweetened. Not here: hard acoustic music, super refreshing, Changüí Duro. I’ll listen to this all day. Highly Recommended.
