Editor's Pick:
A sparkling, old school Cuban Latin jazz recording. It’s all acoustic, and isn’t, weirdly enough, touched by fusion and Irakere — but there’s a rapper on the album, too. Go figure. Cabrera’s the heavy duty bassist, and he’s been in a bunch of Cuban bands, including Iya, cabaret bands, the Ciso Guanche group, El Zun Zun de la Salsa, among others. He’s leading a descarga band, with typically good dance musicianship (though the horns aren’t always in tune); this stuff goes down easy, isn’t dumb and has the sort of swing you need to keep people interested. The coros and singing, though taking a second position to the instrumental solos, are the motor to the whole thing, which occasionally hints at timba. It sure is good, whatever you want to call it; I’d turn this into a timba band and get it over with. Have to love John Coltrane’s workout, "Giant Steps," done Cuban style, even if the soloists come out of the experience a bit bruised. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-03-23)
