Commercial big budget salsa. If you like young heartthrob r&b salsa by the likes of Marc Anthony, Anthony Cruz, Jerry Rivera, or Huey Dunbar, then vocalist Kevin Ceballo, with his model looks and glossy sheen, is for you. The romantic ballads and r&b styled tracks that open the CD may be a little too slick or soft for salsa dura lovers, but thankfully on tracks like “Yo No Sé Que Pasó” there is enough fiery swing and funky beat juggling to satisfy most salseros. Mr. Ceballo is not just another new fresh face on the block, however; he’s been making albums since 2000, and here he’s programming some beats as well. The fact that Ceballo and his producers employ veteran Latin bassist Sal Cuevas, super session trumpeter Dante Vargas, and border-breaking percussionist Luisito Quintero says that they care about music (see the lyrics to “Vivo Por Ella” for a manifesto of sorts) and the sound quality is very professional. DJs will be able to get the crowd moving with several sure fire dance floor pleasers as well. My problem with most commercial salsa like this is the slow, syrupy intros and the over-wrought Mariah Carey school of vocals; that most of these medium-paced tracks do get hotter as they progress is a good thing, and the addition of double trombones and some electric guitar spices things up a bit (check out the better cuts like “Ella” and “Pero no Puedo”). Not my cup of tea overall (I like some grit in my café), but no doubt quite popular on the radio and at the more mainstream clubs and salsa congress venues. The title Renacer refers to the fact that “these [last] few years have been so difficult” for Ceballo but through his savior, Jesus Christ, he has been reborn. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-03-30)
