Editor's Pick:
Asencio, known as Tio Tom, was one of the more important musicians of the Cuban 20th century, born in 1919 and dying in 1991. He composed reams of rumbas full of humor and intelligence and verbal ingenuity, all brimming with street knowledge. He was taken to the cleaners by people more able to negotiate the copyright system, but a few decades ago musicians started putting his name back on compositions that had been claimed by others. And here’s a tribute to his music, produced by René López, the famed musicologist/historian/producer and recorded in Havana, played by a pile of great rumberos, including Orlando Puntilla Rios. He’s joined by Ernesto Gatel, Geovani del Pino, Juan Campos Cardenas, Miguel Chapotin, and more on vocals. Maximino Duquesne, Marcos Dias Scull, Mario Jauregui Francis and others are all on percussion. This is cool, cool, rumba, the percussion well-arranged, the coros precise and heartbreakingly beautiful. I like the fact that a Cuban music recording has been released on the Smithsonian Institution’s own label. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-03-30)
