Editor's Pick:
A fascinating exploration of the mambo’s international influence, documenting the output of several French orchestras — French in that they were based in France, with musicians from all over the world — and filled with high quality music from the era. Good notes explain how the various band leaders came to play Afro-Cuban music, including Lewis Varona, Henry Rossotti, Eddie Warner, Benny Bennet, Ruben Calzado and more. Do not be fooled into thinking that this stuff is inferior, or a novelty. It might not be Machito, but then, nothing is. It’s still highly skilled music, and the singers — from Cuba, often, are perfectly idiomatic. Rocking examples of the influence Cuba had around the world, culturally. Plus it’s fun. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-04-13)
