Charlie Sepulveda
Charlie Sepulveda & The Turnaround
CD
(Turnaround 15652),
Released 2008;
Editor's Pick:
Straight ahead Latin Jazz, with no sweeteners, just the real deal, intellectually alert and open, and rhythmically charged. Sepulveda is supported by a mean group including Eduardo Zayas on piano, Gabriel Rodriguez on bass, Gadwin Vargas on Conga, Raoul Maldonado on drums, Norberto Ortiz on saxophone and Felipe Furniel on vibes. They take on some Blue Note era tunes by Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard, along with new pieces by Sepulveda and the band. As is to be expected nowadays, the band moves between clave and jazz swing without a moment’s hesitation; an example of how the Puerto Rico/New York/Havana jazz scene is in a golden age. Fertile, able, willing. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-06-06)
