Editor's Pick:
This is the venerable group Orchestra Baobab’s best effort to date. A wonderful selection of songs, in diverse styles, some old, some new, all beautifully recorded and packaged, as is usually the case with a Nick Gold production. There are the requisitely stunning Afro-Cuban influenced numbers, the mbalax style tunes, with staccato sabar rhythms and griot touches, as well as some startlingly majestic Congolese rumba and ultra-funky hybrid jams that show influences from salsa, reggae, jazz, and soul as well as traditional Senegalese indigenous styles. Original member and guitar guru Barthélemy Attiso is in the house with his stunning fret board figures and flourishes, directing the orchestra; Issa Cissoko’s sax pours forth from the speakers like molten brown sugar, and Youssou Ndour shows us where he’s coming from on the tune “Nijaay.” There is also some welcome trumpet and trombone, and fabulous vocals from Medoune Diallo, Rudy Gomis, Balla Sidibe, Ndiouga Dieng and Assane Mboup. Next best thing to the sublime live experience. A must have. Very highly recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-06-05)
