So Charlie Cruz sounds like a junior varsity Victor Manuelle. So what: Victor Manuelle doesn’t sound like prime Victor Manuelle anymore, so why not step into the niche of slightly rough sounding Puerto Rican sonero, fronting a tough band. And Cruz can do it, and do it well; at his best he’s a pretty great singer. Here’s an example: on "Corazoncito," he puts in some of the more ebullient, joyful improvisations we’re going to hear all year, the sort that are usually found in the middle of a late night second set, where the sonero’s using all his tools, slowing down time, singing like a trumpet, or using percussion figures and on and on. The rest of the album’s all up tempo, heavy duty dance music, the best that we’ll hear from Puerto Rico, with a dense coro backing up the singer in the style one might hear on well, a Manuelle or Santa Rosa album. Seriously cool, modern salsa, and really perfect for both the dance floor or the living room or, especially, the car this summer.
