While the Cuban maestro’s work from the beginning and end of his career is well known and loved, and thankfully is also nicely documented on disc, little is available from his 70s period; indeed, some have said he was in semi-retirement. Then along comes this reissue of “Super Chops.” Very interesting! It’s not Latin, it’s more of a big-band meets funky fusion, in that electric mid-70s vibe. There is even what sounds like a baritone sax. I am sure Chico’s son Arturo could shed some more light on this lesser known period; but for now we have this CD, and I really think it’s an interesting little record. It’s quite quirky, there are some sudden changes and mood swings; some conga and cowbell – but almost no Afro-Cuban elements. It’s more like a cross between a swingin’ Gerald Ford era late night T.V. show big band date and a soul jazz session for Atlantic Records. The sound quality is not great – perhaps it was mastered from the vinyl – but no matter – it’s worth it just to hear a slice of what the maestro was doing in ’77. The title cut is the best, and is kind of a mutated cha-cha, with more groovy electric sax. Sadly no documentation of who played on the session. Highly Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-06-05)
