Editor's Pick:
A sought after collector’s item, this album really holds up well. The sound is youthfully exuberant one minute, down and funky the next, in the mode of Joe Bataan and Willie Bobo, with that great Barrio mix of soul and Latin that was all abuzz in the streets of Harlem, Brooklyn, and the Bronx from the mid 60s till around 1970. Here are the classic rare groove boogaloo joints like “Spanish Maiden” (featuring soul singer Tony Middleton) and the fun “Dixie Peach.” Chuito and his bravos have that son montuno/cha rhythm down cold, and they effortlessly wed their Latin thing to the Stax soul and corner doo-wop sound – an urban vibe that became very popular all over again in the UK in the 80s. There are also some great proto-salsa cuts like “Ponte Soñar” and “Candela” that are in a more Latino vein – though these songs are also very gritty and bluesy, especially the piano figures. Key to the success of this album’s feel is a young producer Bobby Marin, who would go on to produce some great albums for Jerry Masucci. Much credit to Dean Rudland for his excellent notes and packaging, and the sound is quite decent. Highly Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-06-05)
